Luce County Jail Release Paths

The phrase “Luce County Jail release” may describe a local legal case without identifying the place where the person spent the night or walked out. An official September 2024 commission packet records approval of a sheriff request for a detention contract covering 12 to 14 beds in Alger County. A secondary directory also reports that the former local jail is closed and people are housed in Alger, but that closure statement is not the controlling official source. Contracts and placements can change. The accurate statement is that Luce detainees may be held at Alger under a documented contract, and current location must be confirmed.

A person can leave Alger County Jail for the community, Michigan Department of Corrections custody, another county, federal custody, immigration custody, medical care, or another placement. Only the first path is a clear community release. The release sheet or jail-register entry should give the exact exit time and disposition. A court order can explain why departure was authorized, but it may not show when staff completed processing. The physical custodian’s exit record is therefore the strongest source for the actual departure.

Luce County Jail Contract Releases

The contract arrangement can split one event among several public bodies. The Luce County Sheriff’s Department may hold an arrest report, warrant, commitment, or local administrative record. Alger may hold the booking sheet, custody log, property record, booking photograph, bond-processing detail, and exit timestamp when it physically held the person. The 92nd District Court or 11th Circuit Court holds the judicial record that explains bond, dismissal, sentence, or transfer authority.

This split is not a defect in the record. It reflects which office created each item. Begin by asking Luce which facility received the person. Then ask that physical facility for the release event. If one office says another is the custodian, keep that answer and redirect the narrow request. Do not treat a transfer of the request as proof that no booking or release occurred. Confirm Luce County Jail Releases

No official online Luce roster or recent-release archive was found during the research sweep. The sheriff page gives contacts and payment codes, but not a current custody search, release-date field, or photo list. Absence from that page has no status meaning. A careful Luce County Jail release check uses direct agency records and then adds court or notification evidence where useful.

1. Call Luce Sheriff and give the booked name, date of birth, approximate arrest date, and case number if known. Ask which facility physically held the person.
2. If Alger held the person, call Alger Sheriff/Jail. Ask whether the person left Alger custody and whether the disposition was release to the community or transfer.
3. Request the booking/release sheet or jail-register entry with the booking number, exit date and time, and disposition or destination.
4. Check MiCOURT for the bond order, dismissal, sentence, or bindover. Use the clerk when the online record is old, missing, nonpublic, or needs certification.
5. Check Michigan in VINELink only as a supplement. Luce or Alger participation was not confirmed in the live agency selector, so no alert should be promised.

If the jail record says MDOC took custody, move to OTIS and read Current Status before drawing a conclusion. “Prisoner” means current state custody. “Parolee” means release from prison with continuing state supervision. “Discharged” means the relevant MDOC jurisdiction ended. Luce County Jail Release Contact

The sheriff is the first contact for a Luce arrest or commitment. Ask a narrow, factual question: whether the office holds the named record, which jail physically housed the person, and which form or address should receive a written request. The office does not publish a release door, routine release hour, weekend practice, property-return process, current capacity, or online archive. Those details should be confirmed with the current physical custodian rather than inferred from an old building or payment code.

The official page lists GovPayNow location code 7592 for inmate payments. That code is an administrative payment route. It does not prove that a person is housed at 411 W. Harrie Street, that the former jail is operating, or that payment caused a release. Confirm custody and any bond event from the responsible agency record.

Request Luce County Jail Records

Michigan FOIA, MCL 15.231 and following sections, governs nonexempt records of public bodies. Use the Luce County FOIA page and linked form. Describe an existing record rather than asking staff to create an explanation. A useful request identifies the person and approximate booking, then asks for the booking/release sheet or jail-register entry, including the booking identifier, holding facility, exit date and time, disposition, destination, and any transfer or hold notation maintained in that record.

Request the booking photograph separately. If Alger performed the physical booking, it may own that image even when Luce owns the arrest report. Luce’s posted fee schedule allows copies at no more than $0.10 per letter or legal page, actual postage or media, and labor billed in 15-minute increments under its stated method. A qualifying indigency affidavit waives the first $20. An estimate above $50 requires a 50 percent deposit, and unusual circumstances permit one extension of no more than ten business days.

Ask for electronic delivery or inspection when practical. If part of the response is withheld, ask for the cited exemption and all reasonably separable nonexempt portions. Court records follow MCR 8.119 and the clerk’s procedures, not the county executive-branch FOIA appeal path. A narrow request usually makes the custodian question easier to solve.

Record the date of each response and keep the agency’s wording. The bond-posting time, court order time, physical exit time, VINE alert, and later database update need not match. That difference does not make every source wrong. Use the court event to explain the authority, the jail entry to establish the door time, and a receiving-agency record to explain any transfer. If Luce says Alger holds the exit record, preserve that routing answer and send the focused request to Alger rather than broadening the original request.

Luce County Jail Versus MDOC Releases

Luce County combines a small sheriff operation and cross-county detention arrangement with Newberry Correctional Facility, a large MDOC state prison. Those systems share geography, not custody authority. A Luce detainee may physically exit Alger County Jail in Munising. A state prisoner may leave Newberry Correctional Facility on parole or at discharge. The first event belongs to county jail records. The second belongs to MDOC and OTIS.

Do not search OTIS for a jail-only sentence and call a missing result proof of release. OTIS expressly excludes county jail and city lockup cases. In the other direction, do not ask Luce Sheriff to verify an MDOC prison discharge. Identify the custodian first, then use that system’s event field. This distinction is the central safeguard against turning a true change in one agency’s custody into a false claim about a person’s overall status.
